Michael TOTTEN has a niece piece on this largely unnoticed community in ANBAR Province.
He describes the struggle of Marines’ unit in this outskirt both of Fallujah and Bagdad since July to bring security.
Two important points:
- an interesting discussion of the role of local sheiks from 2003 to present day (especially Sheik MISHAN ABBAS, the « sheik of the sheiks »)
- a good depiction of the complex networks between Iraqi supporting insurgency and AQI and their counterpart waging counterinsurgency against their fellow tribes and family members.
